Child labor is one of the major problems in developing countries including Bangladesh. If a child is made to work from, an early age with no scope of going to school is called child labor.

There are several causes of child labor. Poverty is the main cause of it. Because of poverty, children have to engage themselves in different risky works with a view to earning their livelihood.

Their parents are not able to bear their educational expense because of being poor. In the early age, they have to engage themselves in different kinds of works due to earn their livelihood. When the supposed to go to school, they have to go out for their earning. They have to work as day worker, flower seller, servant at household, hotel boy, tea seller etc. Most of the poor children are seen to break bricks and stone for house building. Some of them work as rickshaw puller, some work in garment factories and mills. Most of the time, they have to work in risky environment. Most of the time, they work very dangerous situation and polluted environment. As a result, they have to suffer a lot in different kinds of fatal diseases. Lack of awareness of the guardians is also another cause of increasing child labor. Besides, social and cultural traditions and children's' own desire are also responsible for child labor.

The consequences of child labor are very far reaching. Child labor has many negative consequences. It hinders our socio-economic development. We know that children are a major part of our population. They are the future leader of any country. A greater part of the total population becomes a burden due to child labor. We cannot go forward without them. If they could be educated, they would contribute to the country. 

According to UNICEF, the total number of children in Bangladesh is 61.3 millions. A survey of BIDS, the number of street children is 6,79,728 and this number will increase in 11,44,754. In fact, it is a alarming news for Bangladesh. It is estimated that the number of worker children in Bangladesh is 7.4 millions. The number of children who work as servant at household is 50,000.

We must work together to get rid of child labor. It is impossible to take any kind of progressive activities due to child labor. It is a great hindrance to the national development for any country. Government can make a rule for saving the children. The must be educated. They have to provide all kinds of medical, physical and mental support for leading their better life.

In the end it can be said that effective measures must be taken to stop child labor. The law of international child labor must be implemented. Government must take action to educate poor children. Public awareness must be raised. Thus we can get rid of the curse of child labor.
