Bangladesh is a land of rivers. Many of these rivers are wide and long. The small rivers are filled with water in rainy season and dry up in winter season. All these rivers can be used for various purposes.

There are about 230 big or small rivers in our country. The main rivers are the Padma, the Meghna, the Jamuna the Karnafuli etc. The Karnafuli rises in the Lusai Mountains. The other rivers rise in the Himalayas and they all flow into the Bay of Bengal.

The rivers are very useful for our existence. They are great source of fishes. And fish is one of our main foods. They are also helpful for our agriculture. They bring a lot of silt which makes our soil fertile. Besides these, they play an important role in waterway communication. So, the rivers of our country are inter-related with our lives.

The rivers of our country are not only used for different purposes but also they are great source of wealth. They are the best homes of many fishes, birds and planktons. Some rivers are the home of the king of fishes Hilsa. We export them meeting our need. As a result, we can earn a lot of foreign currency. Besides, a lot of people of our country are engaged in fishing. So, the profession of fishing has solved our unemployment problem to some extent.

Some of our rivers have strong current. These are used to produce electricity. We have a project at Kaptai for producing electricity. Besides, these rivers are the most important means of communication. Different kinds of boats, steamers and ferries play through these rivers. They carry passengers and goods for one place to another.

In spite of having a lot of advantages, rivers have some disadvantages too. Sometimes these bring flood. In the rainy season, they often overflow their banks and cause flood. This flood causes great harm to our lives and properties. In the long run, it can be said that rivers are not mere blessing for us. Sometimes, they may cause great harm to us. Nevertheless, they manage us of food, wealth and livelihood.
