Miserable Condition of Slum Dwellers

Khairul Alam, Staff Reporter, 26 February 2022: The slum dwellers of Dhaka city are living in extreme misery and despair. Almost all slums in Dhaka do not have access to health care, education, electricity and clean water. Besides the various problems of the slum dwellers, there is also the fear of eviction.

Nazrul Islam, a city researcher, said, “Many people think that slums are hotbeds of crime. But their idea is wrong. Most of the slum dwellers of Dhaka are innocent and honest.”

Khoka Mia of Kamalapur slum was asked, what are the civic benefits available in the slum? In response, he highlighted the dilapidated state of civic amenities in the slums. He also complained that the slums of Dhaka do not have access to electricity and clean water.

Salma A. Shafi, an urban planner, said that the housing system in Dhaka should be ensured through public and private initiatives.
