The major floods in the history of Bangladesh were in the year of 1974, 1978, 1980, 1988, 1996, 2004, 2008, 2013 and 2017.
The 1988 flood caused the most damage. The flood inundated most parts of the country. Many people died due to waterlogging, lack of food and various diseases.
The 2004 flood was devastating too. The flood destroyed a significant portion of the Boro paddy crop. The flood killed about 800 million people and damaged 2 million acres of farmland. It damaged housing, livestock and fisheries too.
The 2008 flood caused severe damages in almost all parts of the country including coastal areas.
The monsoon flood 2013 visited in some districts of northern Bangladesh. Millions of people were died. A total of 16 rivers including Padma, Meghna, Brahmaputra, Jamuna, Teesta and Dharla flowed over the danger zone.
In 2017, flood inundated with several parts of Bangladesh and damaged huge amount of crops. The flood continued until one week and caused considerable damage to housing, property and infrastructure.
In the long run, floods are nothing new to the people of Bangladesh. It is not possible for us to stop these due to geographical location. Even then, the harmful effects of floods should be minimized as much as possible. This requires the concerted efforts of people at all levels.
